Au Pair is a French word used to define a person temporarily hosted

by a family in exchange for child caring.

The Au Pair concept was born in 18th century Switzerland. At that time it was common for upper-class families to send their daughters to another part of the country or region where another language was spoken. There, they could live with a family, caring for children, learn the language and gain intercultural experience.
